The man fetchmail and man procmail pages also have a lot of useful info. its not really a problem what you describe its a design decision Apple made. Wikipedia has a reasonable starting point for learning more about procmail. You can use something like mutt to read the mail, personally I don't read mail manually that I'm doing a fetchmail with, I would use it for email automation, which is what procmail is good at, essentially you can create 'recipes' to filter, process and redirect messages. Now, seemingly random my Mac Mail gets non responding and Ive to hard quit it and reload it. On my private mail Ive two-factor turned on, while this is not the case with my work mail.

Update 3: Sounds like iOS4 addresses some of this with an archive/delete toggle for gmail, as pointed out in the comments.

To download Gmail from an email server on your Mobile, iPhone, iPad, PC or other device, you need to enable POP or IMAP in Gmail settings and then configure Gmail with your email client via POP or IMAP on. You may need to make these folders too, I forget. I have multiple email addresses all of which are configured IMAP but only 4 are GMail accounts.
